Department store chain John Lewis is preparing for a major leadership transition as managing director Peter Ruis steps down from his position next month.

Parent company John Lewis Partnership confirmed that Mr. Ruis will officially relinquish his role as managing director in September to "pursue new projects."

He will be succeeded by Will Kernan, an experienced retail leader who previously headed prominent high street brands including River Island and The White Company.

Mr. Ruis has led the department store's core recovery strategy since January 2024, returning to a business where he earlier served as buying director. During his tenure as managing director, he spearheaded key initiatives, including reviving the iconic "Never Knowingly Undersold" price commitment and initiating an £800 million store modernization program.

Moving forward, Mr. Kernan will collaborate directly with John Lewis Partnership Chairman Jason Tarry to guide the group back to profitability amidst a challenging retail environment. Mr. Kernan, who currently serves as a non-executive director on the board, will assume the managing director role in mid-September ahead of the peak autumn and Christmas trading period.

Reflecting on his departure, Mr. Ruis stated:

"After nearly three years of significant investment and modernisation, the business is now on a much stronger footing. I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved and there is so much more still to come. I would like to thank our customers, partners, brands and suppliers for their incredible support and I wish Will the best of luck as he takes up the reins."

Commenting on his appointment, Mr. Kernan said:

"Having served on the partnership’s board for three years, I have a clear understanding of the John Lewis business and a huge appreciation for the partnership’s values and employee-ownership model. We have significant headroom for growth and I’m looking forward to leading the team to ensure John Lewis remains the country’s most trusted and loved retailer, in store and online."

The executive change comes alongside ambitious retail expansion plans. Earlier this month, John Lewis announced a major focus on fitness and wellbeing, outlining plans to establish departments combining:

  • Sportswear and footwear
  • Wearable technology
  • Post-workout recovery equipment
  • AI-powered fitness solutions
  • In-store expert services
