Over Half of UK Small Business Leaders Struggle with Common Business Terms, Hiscox Study Finds

As UK companies approach key tax filing deadlines, new research reveals a widespread lack of confidence among business leaders when navigating financial, operational, and corporate jargon.
A study conducted by specialist insurer Hiscox, which surveyed 350 UK business owners and directors, found that 52% of respondents do not feel confident in their understanding of common business terms and acronyms.
Turning to Search Engines, Social Media, and AI
Faced with unfamiliar terminology, the majority of business owners resort to digital shortcuts rather than professional advisors:
- Search Engines (69%): Google remains the primary tool for clarification.
- Social Media (16%): Platforms like LinkedIn and TikTok are increasingly used for quick explanations, jumping to 31% among business leaders under the age of 30.
- AI Tools (15%): Artificial intelligence platforms such as ChatGPT and Perplexity are being leveraged to interpret complex concepts.
Commenting on the reliance on generative AI, Nick Thornhill, Direct and Partnerships Director at Hiscox, cautioned:
“AI tools can help to provide quick explanations, but they are not always consistent with how information is sourced or explained. As these tools are becoming more widely used in day-to-day business decision-making, it becomes increasingly important that business owners cross-check their understanding, especially when terminology feeds into financial, operational or compliance decisions.”
In addition to digital tools, business leaders reported using online courses (13%), books (12%), community forums (11%), and executive coaches (11%) to improve their business literacy.
Most Searched Business Acronyms in the UK
Alongside the survey, Hiscox analyzed search volume data across more than 500 common phrases and abbreviations. KPI (Key Performance Indicator) topped the list as the UK’s most searched business acronym, generating 60,800 monthly queries.
The most queried acronyms include:
- KPI – 60,800 monthly searches
- DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) – 45,590 monthly searches
- GDPR – 43,480 monthly searches
- CRM – 42,800 monthly searches
- EBITDA – 33,200 monthly searches
- SaaS – 25,200 monthly searches
- SEO – 24,300 monthly searches
- ERP – 19,800 monthly searches
- API – 18,500 monthly searches
- VAT – 17,500 monthly searches
The Emotional Impact of Jargon
The research highlighted the psychological toll that complex jargon takes on entrepreneurs. When confronted with terms they do not understand, business owners reported feeling frustrated (16%), intimidated (13%), and overwhelmed (12%).
To help executives sharpen their knowledge, Hiscox has released an interactive online quiz testing comprehension of key industry abbreviations.
